நம்ம புது வள்ளம் {New Sailing Boat}

Our New Vallam (New Sailing Boat)

The Palk Strait is known for frequent Indian fishermen captures and shootings by the Sri Lankan Navy.
The epic history of Rameswaram dates 5,000 years back to the Ramayana era. Dass, a fisherman by birth, lived in Thangachimadam. The Indo-Norwegian Project (INP) was started in 1972, started fisher men training centers.
Dass sent his son, Swamy, for training. Anwar, a fisherman from a nearby fishing village, also joined. Swamy and Anwar were close and trues friends. Swamy spoke to his father, Dass, that if they had a Vallam, they can go deep waters for a better catch.
He travelled to Tuticorin along with his elder son Raja. They met Esakki, the lucky chief boat craftsman and paid advance. All on shore waved hands and wished them for their long journey!
“Machan, host the sail”.
Initially, a newly-constructed boat would always have a little seawater seepage. As the boat remains in sea for few days, these holes get automatically filled with natural fillers.
The Mookaiyur fishermen migrated to Rameswaram Island about five generations back. The Kachadeev island was given away to Sri Lanka retaining the Indian fishermen traditional fishing rights in Palk Strait.
When the Vallam reached Vallinokkam ship channel. However, the water level steadily increased in the boat….
Swamy sensed the danger,looked around in fear.Some fishermen were busy catching sardines in the channel.Anwar was God-sent. “Yienng”………..”yienng”. He shouted “Anwar”…. “Anwar”.“Oh,Swamy”…. “my Swamy” he nervously shouted…
“danger”… “yei danger”
shouted again… “de, danger pa”.
Anwar immediately called all the village fishermen and beached the boat safely.
But, no other way… both realized and agreed to
part with great reluctance.The fishing hamlets in the north passed by one after the other…

Pamban: Thevallam reached Pamban safely.Maria jumped out of happiness as if Dass had brought 100 madangu Vancharam {King fish, 1 madangu= 37.50 kg}.Dr APJ Abdul Kalam’s memorial is constructed at Thangachimadam.
